A Grassroots Effort to End forced Annexation Abuse in North Carolina

"We lay it down as a fundamental, that laws, to be just,
must give a reciprocation of right; that, without this, they are mere arbitrary rules of conduct, founded in force, and not in conscience."
--Thomas Jefferson

MISSION STATEMENT

To Energize, Mobilize, Educate, Organize, and Facilitate, any and all North Carolina Citizen Grassroots Effort to Change North Carolina's Forced Annexation Laws

WE OPPOSE INVOLUNTARY ANNEXATION

Including Extra Territorial Jurisdictions
(which leads to annexation)

By Any Town, Village, City or Municipality for the Following Reasons:

Involuntary Annexation:

  • causes distrust of governmental and political leaders

  • does not provide residents a voice in the process and a vote for or against annexation

  • is arbitrary and seems to be pursued to increase political power and available revenue to the municipal leaders, elected and non-elected

  • fails to account for the will of the majority of affected property owners.

  • increases taxes for residents and property owners in annexed areas.

  • may increase taxes for existing residents of the municipality.

  • increases government costs to deliver services.

  •  costs to the municipality often exceed the revenue from the new taxes generated by annexation for many years.

  • may cause a municipality to be unable to afford the upkeep of its infrastructure without raising taxes.

  • provides services that the great majority of residents do not want or need.

  • forces regulations and rules that may be inappropriate for some areas.

  • forces residents to live in a municipality for which they chose not to live

  • does not provide for a separate identity for residents who desire such.

  • favors issues decided by urban, not rural interests.

  • is favored by large developers and special interests, against the community.

  • encourages abuse of the power to annex by some municipalities.

INVOLUNTARY ANNEXATION IS AGAINST THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF A DEMOCRACY!
